An old man in a grey hooded cloak stands alone on a snowy summit. In his raised hand a lantern, and inside it a six-pointed star burns. His other hand rests on a staff. All around is whiteness and silence — no other figure in sight.
The Hermit is prudence and foresight, a time of solitude, of growth, of meditation. The necessary pause after which you can see further. He isn't chasing truth and he isn't hiding from the world: he is a beacon, and his light tells those who come after him — «where I stand, you can stand too». This is a card of attainment, not of searching.
The wheel of life is only visible from outside; from within it you see no more than the nearest arc. The Hermit steps aside, climbs, lifts his lantern — and sees the whole design for the first time. The lantern lights not everything at once but exactly one step — and that is enough to keep walking.
Withdraw for a while, stop answering everyone at once, give yourself a night and some silence — the answer comes from there. Don't try to light the whole road: it's enough to see the one next step. Sometimes the best move is to step back and lift the lantern higher.
A season of solitude and inner work is coming, after which you'll see further than before. A mentor will appear on your path — or you'll become one for someone else. What looks now like a retreat will turn out to have been a climb.
The reversed Hermit is solitude grown into avoidance. The lantern is turned downward: wisdom becomes secrecy, an unwillingness to share, suspicion. A fear of people, a flight from responsibility dressed up as «I just need to think»; sometimes deceit, concealment, corruption masquerading as wise restraint. The card's oldest meaning — betrayal — belongs to exactly this pole. Here isolation isn't a path but an escape. The way back is to turn the light forward again and take at least one step toward people.
