Ten of Air

Manara Erotic Tarot
painful endingrock bottombetrayalcycle closureinevitable loss

Unattainability, playing on feelings, manipulation, obsession. Codependency in which the manipulator needs a victim, and the victim needs the manipulator.

The card's image

A man clutches a little shoe and gazes up mournfully toward its owner. At the top of the card a female silhouette swings on a carousel or swings; or perhaps it is a helicopter lifting off above a skyscraper rooftop. The city's panorama spreads beneath her feet. She is unattainable, floating above; he is disheveled, staring up hungrily, waiting for the moment she descends or at least extends her little foot.

Interpretation

The Ten of Air is a card of unattainability, playing on feelings, and obsession. It can be read in two ways — watch the neighboring cards. This is not a card of mutual love and deep feeling but of dependency, partly of obsession with the object of one's passions.

You may occupy the coquettish position — playing along with the partner, performing a kind of narcissism: now taking a step toward them, now retreating to a distance. The heroine above is unattainable and savors the fact that she is waited for below.

Or you are in the man's place: disheveled, staring hungrily and sorrowfully at the desired one, waiting for her to descend or at least extend her foot. This is the worship of a partner, codependent relations in which one cannot live without the other.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Call things by their names: this is not mutual love but a game on feelings and codependency. If you are the one above, unattainable — stop tugging your admirer back and forth on the thread of hope; that is power, not closeness. If you are below, shoe in hand — remove the idol from the pedestal: one who makes you wait and beg for crumbs is not making you happy. Next to dynamic cards a light flirtation with no promises is fine; next to static ones — end the manipulation and be honest.

What the forecast holds

Ahead comes an event — a meeting or a parting — that will rob you or your partner of peace. There is a real risk of being caught on the hook of hazy hopes for something greater than what is actually there: someone will hold the other on a ghostly thread. The reverse scenario is also possible — "leading someone on and dropping them," throwing feelings aside. To avoid getting tangled in codependency you will need to call the game a game and not pass obsession off as love.

Ten of Air reversed

The reversed Ten of Air is codependency driven to exhaustion. Playing on feelings stops being coquetry and becomes a prison for two: the unattainable heroine above no longer teases but openly torments — she feeds a ghostly hope, savors her power, keeps the admirer on a shoe-leash with no intention of ever descending. And the one below transforms from a lover into an obsessive: pursuing, refusing to let go, ready for humiliation for a crumb of attention, confusing the pain of dependency with the depth of feeling. Manipulator and victim are locked together: one cannot do without the power, the other without the worshipped tormentor. The reversed card's counsel: sever the thread — let go of the shoe or come down from the swing. Where someone makes you wait and beg, there is no love, only hunger; it cannot be fed by another person. Honesty and distance are the only way out of this circle.

How it differs from Waite

Ten of Swords — Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Manara Erotic TarotTen of Air

In Waite the Ten of Swords is a figure lying face down pierced by ten blades in the back, a dawn on the horizon: total collapse, an agonizing end, rock bottom, after which only a new dawn comes. Manara shifts the register: not annihilation but codependency and playing on feelings — an unattainable heroine aloft and a longing admirer below. Where Waite speaks of absolute finality and a treacherous blow, Manara speaks of obsession and manipulation: one worships, the other holds them by a thread of hope.
