Judgement

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
awakeningreckoningresurrectioncalling

All the energy of Tarot is concentrated in Judgement. The birth of consciousness, announced by a trumpeting angel: a calling, a vocation, an irresistible desire. The resurrection of what was being incubated.

The card's image

An angel blows a trumpet, announcing awakening; on its banner a flesh-colored cross dividing an orange ground into four squares (the four elements/energies). From the depths of the Earth rises a pale-blue androgynous being. On the angel's head a golden egg; along the trumpet 22 steps are traced, by which a dark-blue disc of awareness ascends. The woman looks at the man and/or the child, the man has raised his eyes to heaven, the angel looks directly at us — its action is addressed to all.

Interpretation

After the receptivity of the Moon The Moon and the new construction of the Sun The Sun comes the birth of consciousness: the appearance of a new dimension is announced by the trumpeting angel, whose trumpet symbolizes an irresistible desire. Anima and animus have reached peace through prayer and created the divine androgyne.

Upright — a calling, a vocation, an irresistible desire, realization. Birth, rebirth, a renaissance, the awakening of consciousness; good news, an announcement, triumph, renown. A future project, the birth of a child, healing. The union of a couple around a shared task — their real or symbolic 'child.'

After dwelling in the depths of the unconscious, after the developmental tasks have been resolved through pain, new life awakes: everything that was hidden or incubated comes to the surface. When this card falls — the person has been called; if they do not answer the calling, difficulties will constantly arise on their path.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Answer the calling; acknowledge your deep and divine desire and realize it. You have been called — this is not a time for doubt but a time for awakening: what was being incubated is ready to come to the surface. Do not resist your deep nature, otherwise difficulties will constantly arise on the path. Beside the World The World this is the final step before full realization; beside Strength Strength the calling raises everything that it held in potential.

What the forecast holds

A calling, realization, good news, and a rebirth are coming. Ahead lies the awakening of a vocation, the birth of an idea or a child, healing, an announcement, triumph. Energies are growing simultaneously from Earth toward Heaven and from Heaven toward Earth — the one who prays is rewarded instantly. This is the final step before the full realization of the World; answer the calling — and new life will be resurrected.

Judgement reversed

The reversed Judgement — a calling that went unanswered: the neurosis of failure, despair, inexplicable difficulties pulling the person down to 'the floor of the tomb' from which they were summoned. Connected to birth circumstances: a difficult birth, complications of pregnancy, the unconscious feeling of 'not being wanted.' Multiple forms of resistance to one's deep nature and vocation. Sometimes — an indication of a judicial act, the necessity of appearing before a court.

How it differs from Waite

Judgement — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithJudgement
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)Judgement

Waite gives a Christian scene of resurrection: the archangel Gabriel with a trumpet and a red cross on the banner, the dead rising from graves with raised hands, a banner hanging from the trumpet — the Last Judgment and the awakening to eternal life. The Marseille Judgement is close in image but in our system it is read as the birth of consciousness and the call of vocation: the trumpeting angel announces an irresistible desire, the androgynous being rises from the earth. Waite emphasizes religious resurrection and evaluation; Marseille emphasizes the calling: when this card falls, the person has been called, and resistance to the call creates difficulties.
