In the Marseille tradition — the Papesse, not the High Priestess. The number 2 as pure accumulation: receptivity, incubation, mystery, waiting. She broods over the egg, and over herself.
The Papesse sits between a veil falling from the sky and curling inward — the symbol of enclosure in a sanctuary. On her knees a flesh-colored book: she studies the laws of human incarnation, yet she is not reading — the volume lies open as if she herself were the book, waiting for someone to decipher it. Her headdress is marked with four points (the cardinal directions), the tiara ending in an orange dot at the very edge of the frame. On her chest are three small crosses. Beside her a white oval egg lies in incubation. Her pallor is twofold: purity and cold, a longing to be warmed.
📖Open flesh-colored book — the laws of incarnation; she herself is the book, awaiting the one who will awaken it
🥚White oval egg — potential in incubation; what is preparing to be born
🏛️Veil from the sky — enclosure in a temple or convent; solitude chosen by her own will
👑Tiara with orange dot — the link between knowledge rooted in matter and pure intellect
✝️Three crosses on the chest — imprisoned in matter, she belongs to the spiritual world
Interpretation
The number 2 in Tarot is not 'one plus one' but pure accumulation: receptivity, incubation, mystery, waiting. The Papesse is the first feminine figure among the Majors — enclosed, receptive, virginal. This is the untouched part within us that has never been reached: a well of purification and trust, a source of great potential.
Upright — accumulation, preparation, incubation of an idea, a period of study before action. Patience, steadfastness, solitude by one's own choosing. Faith, knowledge, purity, devotion; a woman of high inner dignity — mentor, healer, guide. In love — a union based on kinship of souls.
The Papesse knows, but does not act and does not speak aloud; her wisdom is passive and inexpressible. This is the image of an actress who has learned her role before taking the stage: the knowledge is there, but it is still within. To live only within her, without the active principle of the Magician, is to condemn oneself to cold.
With the Magician The Magician she forms a pair of receptive accumulation and active will: the two incubates what the one begins. With the Empress The Empress — two feminine faces: the Papesse looks left (reception, the past), the Empress right (action). With the Hanged Man The Hanged Man they are analogues of the second degree: if the Papesse is the incubator, the Hanged Man is being incubated.
Reversed — purity turned to cold: frigidity, rigidity, an obsession with virginity that amounts to a ban on life. Isolation, frustration, knowledge closed in on itself and never awakened.

Advice & forecast
✦ The card's advice
Be patient, keep silence, do the inner work — do not rush the hatching. Now is the time to study and incubate, not to act: knowledge ripens within like an actress learning her role before the entrance. Beside the Magician The Magician the ripened idea is ready for its first step; but do not let solitude harden into cold — the Papesse deprived of warmth becomes the ice of isolation.
🔮 What the forecast holds
Something is preparing to be born: an idea, a feeling, or a decision is ripening in silence. A period of accumulation, preparation, and trusting the mystery is coming; the question is only whether you will brood on it in worthy solitude. After incubation will come the hour when what is being harbored is ready to emerge into action — but it cannot be hurried.
↓ The Popess reversed
The reversed Papesse — purity turned to cold: frigidity, rigidity, an obsession with virginity that amounts to a ban on life. The harmful mother who, with icy authority, prevents anything from 'hatching from the egg.' Isolation, whether imposed or prolonged; frustration, rejection of warmth and passion; knowledge that closes in on itself and never awakens. Beside The Magician this signals that incubation has become a flight from action.

How it differs from Waite
Rider-Waite-SmithThe High Priestess
vs
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)The Popess
Waite renamed the card the High Priestess and filled it with Kabbalah: the scroll TORA, the pillars Boaz and Jachin, the crescent moon at her feet, the pomegranate veil. The Marseille Papesse is simpler and more earthly: she is precisely a Papesse (a reference to the legendary Pope Joan), and her book is not a scroll of secret doctrine but the laws of human incarnation. The central Marseille image is brooding: she sits over an egg, doubly in incubation. Waite makes her the keeper of occult knowledge; Marseille makes her a virgin witness and well of purification, whose wisdom is passive and inexpressible.
