Temperance

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
balanceintegrationpatiencealchemy

The number 14 — the fourth arcanum of the second series, the number of stability, like the Emperor. After the purification of XIII it restores the inner circulation: a time of peace and health.

The card's image

An angel stands on the earth, not flying, though its pale-blue wings would allow it: Temperance has moved beyond the carnal, but is rooted in the Earth. Yellow pupils carry the light of pure consciousness; a five-petaled red flower on the head — the quintessence. At its feet two serpents are lovingly entwined — the two sexual poles, the caduceus of Hermes. On the chest four yellow triangles (the four centers of the human being); above them a yellow circle with a cutout. The angel pours liquid from vessel to vessel. From beneath the hem, the tip of a purple shoe is visible.

Interpretation

Temperance comes after the deep work of the unnamed arcanum Death, which swept away everything useless and created the void necessary for the restoration of inner circulation: the time of peace and health has arrived. The card depicts an angel whose name has no article — neither masculine nor feminine, for an angel's nature is genderless.

Upright — healing, health, protection, reconciliation. Dynamic balance, the circulation of energies and fluids, exchange, harmony, an even, calm character. The guardian angel, the benevolent part of the unconscious; warning dreams, timely action.

Its work is not cutting away (as in XIII) but adding the value that calms destructive passions: to jealousy — trust; to greed — good sense. Temperance complements energies rather than opposing them; this is the secret of balance, the mastery of passions through sublimation. Its message: 'find your center, walk the middle path.'

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Walk the middle path, add (rather than cut away), seal the union with yourself — and trust the guardian. Where there is an inner rift between mind and body, spirit and desire, what is needed is circulation, not struggle: add trust to jealousy, good sense to greed. Find your center. Beside the unnamed arcanum Death you are restoring what was purified; do not fall into extremes, or the angel 'grows smaller.'

What the forecast holds

A period of peace, health, and harmonious exchange is coming. Ahead lies healing, reconciliation, the restoration of equilibrium after a crisis; you are under the protection of the benevolent part of the unconscious. Energies and feelings will come back into circulation. If you hold to the middle path and trust the guardian, a dynamic balance will take hold; extremes will undermine this protection.

Temperance reversed

The reversed Temperance — an imbalance the person creates for themselves: a warning to those addicted to alcohol, drugs, or any behavior that unbalances them. An excessive inclination toward 'temperance' that has turned into miserliness and greed; extremes, inability to find the center. A loss of protection when the person stops believing in it — the angel 'grows smaller and smaller' and loses part of its power.

How it differs from Waite

Temperance — Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)Temperance

Waite places the angel with one foot in water and one on land, a solar sign on the forehead and irises by the stream — alchemical tempering, harmony of opposites at rest. The Marseille Temperance is close in essence but differently nuanced: the angel has no article, is genderless, and its work is the addition of value that calms destructive passions (to jealousy — trust; to greed — good sense). Waite emphasizes alchemical mixing and temperance; Marseille emphasizes sublimation: the serpent-instincts at its feet are transformed into spiritual energy, control over passions not through suppression but through elevation.

Symbolism & correspondences

The degree of number 14 (the fourth degree of the second series) — the analogue of four: the number of stability, but stabilizing not matter but the circulation of energies. This is a balanced, sublimating force that unites the active and the receptive in a middle path. Numerologically — dynamic balance, the addition of value instead of cutting away.
