Eight of Wands

Thoth Tarot
swift momentumrapid newsforward motionpassionate messagealignment

"Swiftness." The etherealization of the idea of fire: everything coarse has vanished, leaving energy in its most refined sense — an electric current, pure light. The phenomena of speech, light, electricity; a sudden, brilliant idea.

The card's image

The luminous wands have turned into electrical discharges, striking downward in geometrically precise rays. There is no flame — it has all been spent in transforming the wands into light; what remains is pure, dematerialized energy of high velocity. A rainbow arcs over the card, the seven colors of the spectrum. This is the "etherealization" of fire: Mercury in Sagittarius brings from Chokmah the message of primordial Will — speech, light, electricity, instantaneous thought.

Interpretation

The Eight of Wands — "Swiftness" — corresponds to Hod and is mirror-symmetric to the Seven Seven of Wands on the Tree of Life, so it carries the same flaws — but with a mitigating circumstance: the Eights correct the errors of the Sevens; the harm has already been done, and now comes the counteraction to it. This is the "etherealization" of the idea of fire: everything coarse has vanished, leaving energy in its most exalted sense — an electric current, pure light.

The decan is Mercury in Sagittarius: Mercury brings from Chokmah the message of primordial Will; the Eight points to the phenomena of speech, light, electricity. This is swift movement, acceleration, tidings that arrive quickly: everything is set in motion, affairs fly forward, messages reach their mark in a flash. "Energy of high velocity" — journeys, news, fast decisions, direct action without excess weight.

The Eight reads as change, transformation and a new beginning; in the suit of Fire it signifies liveliness and extraordinary speed in the unfolding of events — something, usually pleasant and long-awaited, has already "ripened" and is about to "fall" right into your hands. The machine is already running, the matter is gathering momentum, something new is in the air.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Act swiftly and directly, seize the moment: the machine is running, affairs are flying, and the long-awaited is about to fall into your hands. Be ready for a surprise — let yourself be amazed and show mental agility, "produce" a fresh, original idea. This is a favorable time for communication, deals, journeys, sudden but precise steps. Cast off excess weight: energy of high velocity will not bear heaviness. But hold your direction — swiftness without a channel easily breaks into chaos; let speed serve a clear aim rather than scatter in all directions.

What the forecast holds

Acceleration is coming, news, a swift resolution. Everything will be set in rapid motion: affairs will fly, messages will reach their mark in a flash, something new is in the air and will soon come down to earth. This is change, transformation and a new beginning — something pleasant and long-awaited has already "ripened." The tidings may come as an inner illumination, a brilliant idea. The forecast is light and fast: prepare for a surprise and keep your mind agile.

Eight of Wands reversed

Reversed, the Eight is swiftness collapsing into haste: turmoil, hasty conclusions, the spilling of energy, messages that miss their mark. Too fast means without footing; an impulse stripped of direction dissipates. Reversed, this is "not the time" to wait for news or to hope for a quick achievement of goals: what seems to be already flying toward you is in fact not yet on its way. There may be delays amid the general rush, nervousness, talk instead of action, premature steps. It is worth slowing the pace, letting the tidings truly ripen, and not mistaking bustle for movement.

How it differs from Waite

Eight of Wands — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithEight of Wands
Thoth TarotEight of Wands

Both decks speak of the swift approach of the long-awaited, but the substance differs. In Waite this is eight staves flying across the sky — the image of an outer event: an idea, news, a letter or a meeting has already "ripened" and will soon fall into your hands. Here the tidings are refined into pure light and take the form of inner illumination: not so much an external event as a flash of mental agility, an original thought. Waite's Eight brings a message, this one brings insight.

Symbolism & correspondences

Mercury in Sagittarius (first decan of Sagittarius), the sephira Hod (Splendor). Mercury brings from Chokmah the message of primordial Will — the phenomena of speech, light, electricity. Hod is the mirror of Netzach, "correcting" the errors of the Seven; fire is dematerialized into pure light, with a rainbow of the seven colors of the spectrum over the card.
