Page of Swords

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
vigilanceintelligence gatheringcuriositysharp perceptionyouthful wit

The youngest of the court figures of Air, the person and role of the intellectual center. Their posture expresses doubt, indecision between action and inaction. The Page of Swords' question: 'To be or not to be?' — to draw the sword or keep it sheathed.

The card's image

The Page is depicted as a figure standing outside the palace of their suit, not yet daring to enter. The feet of the Page of Swords point in two different directions — this sets an active tendency with a note of receptivity. Their symbol, the sword, is directed toward the sky: active and heavenly, it is akin to the eagle on the World card. The blade raised skyward is an image of a mind reaching upward; the split stance is indecision itself. The Page wears a hat, like the Pages of Wands and Pentacles.

Interpretation

The Page of Swords is the youngest of the court figures of Air, of the people and roles of the intellectual center. Their posture expresses doubt, indecision between action and inaction. They stand at the beginning of the path, in the dynamic between degrees 2 and 3 — between intention and the first deed. Their question: 'To be or not to be?' — to draw the sword or keep it sheathed.

In the upright position — a young, lively, curious mind: a student, a herald, a beginning thinker. A desire to know, to learn, to work things out, to state a viewpoint. A new idea or message appears, a desire to speak out, to make oneself known. This is the freshness and sharpness of a beginning intellect, a readiness to ask questions.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Step from intention to word: stop wavering, ask the question, state your viewpoint, begin learning what draws you. Right now your strength is in the freshness and curiosity of a beginning mind, in a readiness to work things out. But do not get stuck in endless 'to be or not to be': endless wavering between 'speak' and 'stay silent' is itself an anxiety. And mind the measure — youthful sharpness wounds when words fly out in the heat of the moment.

What the forecast holds

A message, some news, or the beginning of a dialogue is coming: a new idea and the desire to speak out and make oneself known through word will appear. This is the beginning of a path in matters of the mind, a moment of apprenticeship. If Knight of Swords falls nearby, wavering will give way to swift movement — thought will rush into the world; if the card is surrounded by heavy ones, be wary of immature, careless words and curiosity crossing into prying.

Page of Swords reversed

Indecision freezes: endless 'to be or not to be' without choosing. The mind shuttles between 'speak' and 'stay silent,' 'enter' and 'retreat,' and does neither. Immature judgment, talkativeness without substance, curiosity crossing into prying, sharp words in the heat of the moment are all possible. Youthful sharpness wounds because it does not yet know its measure. The wish to exist turns into anxiety and self-doubt. Alongside The Moon uncertainty drowns in fears and confusion; alongside Queen of Swords there is a chance to ripen into a clear, independent judgment.

How it differs from Waite

Page of Swords — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithPage of Swords
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)Page of Swords

In Waite the Page of Swords is a youth on a hill raising a sword with both hands and looking back, beneath rushing clouds: vigilance, reconnaissance, a spy, readiness for a verbal skirmish. Marseille strips away the landscape and dynamism and leaves a posture of indecision: the Page stands outside the palace, feet pointing in different directions, sword raised toward the sky — 'to be or not to be,' a wavering between word and silence. Where Waite emphasizes sharp readiness for action, this deck emphasizes the wish to exist, still frozen at the threshold. The sharpness and cutting quality of words in the Marseille Page sounds only in the reversed meaning.
