The Hermit

Thoth Tarot
solitudewisdomself-knowledgethe search for truth

Solitary labor that bears a hidden light: the search for wisdom in the silence where the seed of the future ripens. Not a flight from the world but its most secret work — fertility of the spirit where outwardly there is emptiness.

The card's image

At the center of the picture is a Hand (Yod — 'hand,' the instrument par excellence); the figure of the Hermit himself resembles the letter Yod, and the color of his robe is the color of Binah, in which he is gestated. In his hand is the Lamp, at its center a Sun resembling the Sigil of the great King of Fire. He contemplates, almost worshiping, a greenish Orphic egg (the Universe); the serpent coiled around the egg is many-colored — the iridescence of Mercury. The background is a field of wheat (Virgo, the Grain). Behind Mercury follows the Cerberus he has subdued, the three-headed Hound of Hell; the serpent-wand caduceus grows out of the Abyss. Here is the legend of Persephone and the whole secret labor of Life.

Interpretation

The Hermit is solitary labor that bears a hidden light: the search for wisdom within, in the silence where the seed of the future ripens. Not a flight from the world but a concentration on the secret work whose fruit is not yet visible but already lives. 'Hermitage' here is not a withdrawal from life but its most secret labor — fertility in the most exalted sense.

On the human plane: the card means solitude, silence, a serious attitude to life, 'answer and silence,' and also the illumination that descends only in the quiet. This is a card of self-awareness: the Hermit calls you to turn your gaze inward, to listen to the inner voice, and to seek what is valuable to you, not to those around you.

The counsel is to step back, slow down, carry your lamp through the lower spheres as Psychopomp; to trust the slow ripening, like a seed in the earth. Virgo is linked to the Grain, and the utmost descent into matter becomes the signal of rebirth in Spirit. The Thoth deck stresses the fearlessness and courage needed to attain an independent, wholly unborrowed vision.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Step aside and slow down: what is ripening now requires silence, not an audience. Turn your gaze inward, listen to the inner voice, and seek what is valuable to you, not to those around you — and do not be irritated by others' opinions, so as not to stray from your own path. Carry your light patiently, like a lamp through dark spheres, and trust the slow ripening, like a seed in the earth. The Thoth deck adds courage: to attain a true individuality, you must fearlessly descend into your own depth. Solitude here is fruitful — it is precisely from it that the unseen fruit is born.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies a time of solitude and inner labor: withdrawal from the noise, the search for wisdom, the silence in which illumination descends. In the stillness an invisible seed ripens; a mentor or an inner light may appear to point the way. This is a phase of self-awareness, of a serious attitude to life, of 'answer and silence.' The fruit is born precisely from solitude — beside earthy meanings the card reminds you: the utmost descent into matter is the very beginning of rebirth. To those who can listen to their own voice it promises an unborrowed vision; to those who flee the silence, only scatteredness.

The Hermit reversed

The reversed Hermit is solitude closed in on itself: reclusion without light, barren isolation, a wisdom with no one to share it and nothing to fertilize it. The dryness of Virgo without grain — fault-finding, self-digging, analysis that bears no fruit. Or a refusal to descend into the lower spheres, a fear of Hades, an unwillingness to pass through the descent without which there is no rebirth. The lamp's light is hidden so deep that it lights the road neither for oneself nor for others; Cerberus is not subdued but guards the entrance to one's own closedness. This is also deafness to one's own inner voice: a person either flees the silence altogether or hides in it from life, losing the courage to be himself.

How it differs from Waite

The Hermit — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Hermit
Thoth TarotThe Hermit

Both decks agree at the root — this is a card of solitude, silence, and turning inward — but they color the gesture of withdrawal differently. Waite stresses protection from the external: his Hermit advises not to heed others' opinions, to fence yourself off from disturbances and irritants so as not to stray from your own path; this is solitude as a quiet, protective concentration. The Thoth deck stresses the fearlessness and courage needed to attain a true individuality and an independent perception: its solitude is not a refuge but an act of will, the risk of descending into one's own depth (down to Hades) for the sake of a new birth. Waite's Hermit guards the seeker's peace; the Thoth Hermit demands the courage to look into the darkest depths of oneself.
