Stagnation in the relationship and in feelings, no intention of deciding anything. Someone has grown bored and waits for it all to work itself out: the card of immaturity.
A knight in full armour stands waist-deep in water. On his shoulder rests a water lily; on the bank his faithful horse waits. He seems to have grown into this swamp: he moves neither forward nor back, does not mount the saddle to set out on his way. A dead end in which no one wants to take responsibility for what is happening. The horse stands ready — he need only wish it — but the knight prefers to sit it out in a secluded corner, hoping that everything will somehow sort itself out.

🛡️A knight waist-deep in water — stuck in the swamp of feelings: neither forward nor back, unwilling to decide anything
⏳A languid waiting — shifting the responsibility: let the partner show initiative first
Interpretation
The Knight of Water often comes up when a relationship has reached a dead end, or when one of the partners refuses to take responsibility for what is happening. It is a stagnation in the feelings of one or both: someone has grown bored, does not want to decide anything, and prefers to sit it out in the hope that everything will sort itself out.
That mired knight could turn out to be you, or your partner, and in the worst case — both at once. Then the bond freezes in the swamp: each waits for a move from the other, no one mounts the horse. This is the card of immaturity and of shifting responsibility onto someone else's shoulders.
Sometimes the card points to excessive romanticism, emotionality, idle talk going round in circles — especially beside the air suit. Then it is a stream of empty promises, illusions, hopes for something greater, behind which not a single real action stands.
The advice splits according to the neighbours. Beside static cards — do not rush in headlong before your time: cool down, calm yourself, ease the tension, wait it out. Beside dynamic ones, on the contrary, it is time to climb out of the swamp, leap onto the faithful horse and set out, to take the initiative, to make the first move.
The key is to see where there is patience and where there is cowardice about deciding. Beside the earth suit there is a chance that promises given earlier will at last be fulfilled, though not soon. Three of Water nearby strengthens the motif of a cosy drift, Ace of Air that of empty words and unspoken things that hold you in place.

Advice & forecast
✦ The card's advice
Decide whether this is patience or a flight from decision. Beside static cards — do not rush in headlong before your time: cool down, ease the tension, let the situation settle. Beside dynamic ones — enough of sitting in the swamp: leap onto the horse that waits on the bank and make the first move. Do not shift responsibility onto your partner in the hope that everything will work itself out — left to itself, it will only grow over with weeds. Romance without action is idle talk going round in circles.
🔮 What the forecast holds
Ahead lies stagnation and decline in the union, a weariness with each other, the shifting of responsibility onto the other. A languid waiting for the partner to take the initiative first. This is the card of immaturity: events slow down, decisions are postponed. Beside the earth suit there is a chance that long-standing promises will at last be fulfilled — but not soon; beside the air suit, empty words and illusions without deeds.
↓ Knight of Water reversed
The reversed Knight of Water is stagnation that has reached its limit, or a sudden breaking out of it. In one direction the swamp sucks you down for good: immaturity tips into a complete paralysis of will, both partners grow into the mire, wait for a move from each other for years, feed on empty promises and illusions, talk in circles, while the relationship quietly rots. Romance has degenerated into an endless 'later', and no one takes responsibility. In the other direction the knight suddenly tears off recklessly: he flees the swamp without thinking, throws everything away on impulse, mistaking decisiveness for flight, just so as not to bear the stagnation. The reversed advice: restore honesty with yourself. Acknowledge the dead end aloud, stop waiting for it to work itself out, and either consciously mount the horse and set out, or let go of what has long since died. Beside static cards especially: the stagnation threatens to stretch into years of empty waiting.

In the 'what is' position the Knight of Water — stagnation lies between you: both have grown bored, mired in the swamp, each waiting for a move from the other, deciding nothing for themselves. The hindrance is Ace of Air — unspoken things, empty words, thoughts that were never voiced aloud. Where it heads is The Lovers — toward a real choice, if someone finally mounts the horse. As advice the Knight of Water answers in two ways: with calm neighbours — cool down and wait it out, do not rush into the fire; with active ones — enough waiting, leap onto the horse and act. Your footing The Emperor is your will and your right to take responsibility on yourself. The outcome Ace of Earth — the sprout of a solid, earthly union, if you stop shifting the move onto your partner. Decide for yourself — it will not work itself out, it will only grow over with weeds.

How it differs from Waite
Rider-Waite-SmithKnight of Cups
vs
Manara Erotic TarotKnight of Water
In the Waite tradition the Knight of Cups is a horseman unhurriedly bearing a raised cup: a romantic, a messenger of love, a knight of feeling in motion. Manara takes the same romantic but halts him in a swamp: the knight is mired waist-deep in water, the horse grows bored on the bank. Where Waite says 'he rides bearing an offer of the heart', Manara adds — he is stuck and rides nowhere: romance without action, stagnation, an unwillingness to decide and to take responsibility.
