The Empress

Tarot de Marseille (Conver)
fertilitynurturingbeautycreativityabundance

The number 3 — an explosion of action without prior experience. The egg cracks open, releasing the fledgling: the transition from virginity to creativity, the energy of adolescence with its enormous life force.

The card's image

The Empress holds a scepter resting against the area of the genitals — creative authority wielded with intellect (yellow base of the scepter); under her hand a tiny green sprout, symbol of eternal spring. Her legs are apart; she is pleased with herself, as if she had given birth to herself. To the right a baptismal font — she is ready to baptize and be baptized. A crescent on her red dress echoes the Papesse. A blue throne extends behind her shoulders like heavenly wings. On her crest an underdeveloped eagle. The dress is red at the center, blue at the edges. At her feet a white tamed serpent; on the palace tiles a plant grows.

Interpretation

Everything the Papesse The Popess accumulated in the second degree bursts forth here like a storm not yet knowing where to direct its energy: the egg cracks, releasing the fledgling. This is the transition from virginity to creativity, the energy of adolescence with its allure and inexperience; the age when the body is capable of exceptional regeneration.

Upright — a creative explosion, fertility, abundance, enthusiasm, allure, desire. The force of youth with its joyful fanaticism and belief in action for action's sake; even in a spread for an elderly person this is the revival of energy thought lost. Nature, spring, beauty, flowering.

The Empress looks to the right — toward action and the future. This is a call to dream, to remember the desires of youth, the thirst for the absolute. In a masculine spread — the presence of an attractive woman or one's own creative principle.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Allow yourself to 'explode': create, enchant, trust the life force bursting outward. Do not smother the flowering with caution — now is the time for passionate action and faith in it. But remember: three without grounding burns out quickly; beside the Emperor The Emperor your creative fire will find a firm foundation and hold. Do not allow expression to be suppressed — blocked, it turns into malice.

What the forecast holds

A flowering is coming: a creative explosion, the fertility of an idea or feeling, a surge of youthful energy. Nature awakens, passion seeks an outlet, abundance approaches. But this flowering needs a foundation — otherwise the unstable explosion will fade and fall back into inertia. Find the grounding and spring will turn into fullness.

The Empress reversed

The reversed Empress — a missed opportunity to act, a tendency toward frivolity, infertility, energy (sexual, creative, intellectual) blocked at adolescence. When expression is suppressed or constrained by an external force, the Empress becomes capable of resentment, malice, and venality. An unstable, premature explosion that fades and falls back into inertia. Beside The Emperor this signals that creativity lacks its foundation.

How it differs from Waite

The Empress — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Empress
Tarot de Marseille (Conver)The Empress

Waite makes the Empress a mature mother of abundance: she reclines on cushions in a wheat field, a crown of stars, a Venus-shield, surrounded by ripe nature — the nourishing mother in full flower. The Marseille Empress is younger and more explosive: she is the energy of adolescence, the age of puberty, a creative explosion without experience, not yet knowing where to direct its force. Waite shows accomplished fertility; Marseille shows the fanatical passion of youth that acts for the sake of acting and risks quick disillusionment. Her power is creative but unstable: she needs the grounding of the Emperor.
