Four of Disks

Thoth Tarot
securitycontrolconservationstabilitypossessiveness

The fortress of matter. The authority of Law, which settles everything by peaceful means rather than by force. Stability and control — but alive only in motion: frozen protection is dead.

The card's image

The image shows very large, firm square disks bearing the signs of the Four Elements; the whole composition suggests a fortress. Though rotation is not characteristic of the Four, the disks rotate all the same — static protection is dead. The background is deep azure with yellow moat-like bands, behind which a pattern of green and deep-blue tones stretches — the spaces whose security the fortress guarantees.

Interpretation

The Four of Disks corresponds to Chesed in the element of Earth and carries the title 'Power'. The Four is 'below the Abyss': solidification, materialisation, things have become manifest; in essence this is the expression of the Authority of Law. The heaviness of the earth symbol outweighs the usual weakness of the Four — a force that holds sway over everything and settles all things, but acts not through aggression but through negotiation and peaceful means.

Upright this means stable authority, a secure position, protection, control over matter, order and law. A good sign for stability: a home-fortress, reliable assets, established boundaries, an authority that rests on rules rather than threats. But protection is effective only while it is vigorously active: frozen defence is a dead point.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Hold and order what you have achieved: establish order, stabilise the distribution of forces, defend your positions and stick to your plans. Now is the time to strengthen boundaries and rely on rules rather than pressure — the Law settles everything by peaceful means. But do not let order freeze: even these disks rotate, and frozen protection is dead. Do not be miserly, do not set too narrow a frame, do not lock yourself inside your own fortress. Strength here lies in a defence that remains alive and vigorously active.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies a firm, protected, ordered situation: the authority of law, reliable assets, a home-fortress, established boundaries. Stability and control over matter, an authority that rests on rules. This is a fortress that must be kept alive — as long as order is vigorously active it protects; the moment it freezes, collapse will follow. Security is guaranteed so long as it is not made an end in itself.

Four of Disks reversed

Reversal is conditional. Here — the other side of the fortress: rigidity, miserliness, fear of losing that turns order into stagnation; walls that have locked you in from the inside. Authority clings to form, having ceased to be alive. Sometimes — excessive control, conservatism, the refusal to let change in, so that the fortress crumbles. The shadow: not the time to be miserly, to avoid all risk, to set too narrow a frame, and to cling to familiar suffering.

How it differs from Waite

Four of Pentacles — Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Thoth TarotFour of Disks

In Waite this is the Four of Pentacles — a card that most often sounds as a warning: the attempt to hold on, the wish to cling, leads to inflexibility and excessive possessiveness. The Thoth Four of Disks is less a warning than an affirmation — it is the ability to protect what has been achieved and the very power of a solid structure, the image of a medieval fortress. Both readings meet only at the danger: stability must not turn into stagnation.

Symbolism & correspondences

Sun in Capricorn, Sephira Chesed, element of Earth. At the point of Capricorn the Sun is reborn and 'turns northward'. In the I Ching this corresponds to the hexagram Kun — the Principle of Femininity, the closed, fortified womb. This is the highest degree of stability and structure, the power of the fortress — but a power threatened by stagnation if its wheels cease to turn.
