Four of Wands

Thoth Tarot
celebrationhomecomingharmonymilestonecommunity

"Completion" — the expression of the Power of Law. The primal Will has been built into a firm system: Order, Law, Governance. Venus in Aries adds tact and gentleness; the card's influence dominates the whole suit.

The card's image

Four wands join into a ring. At one end of each is a Ram's head (Chesed, Amun-Ra), at the other a Dove of Venus; the ends touch the circle, completing and limiting the work. Within the circle are four pairs of tongues of flame, an image of balance. Here the forces harden and materialize for the first time: this is the "fullness of the law," an order of things born of warmth and light, very positive and clearly defined.

Interpretation

The Four of Wands — "Completion" — corresponds to Chesed (Mercy), the first Sephirah "below the Abyss." Here the forces harden and materialize for the first time: this is the expression of the Power of Law. The primal Will has been built into a firm system — Order, Law, Governance. The work has been brought to a stable, formed state: stability is achieved, order is laid down, a firm union is concluded.

The masculine nature of fire is emphasized, making this card very positive and clearly defined; its influence dominates all the later cards of the suit. The decan is Venus in Aries: a sign that the work cannot be arranged without tact and gentleness. To a success that holds by itself, Venus adds harmony and charm.

Now it is important not to fuss but to find peace and harmony and, when the occasion allows, to clarify or complete the work, to bring it into focus. This is the "fullness of the law" — the completion of the first stage, a foundation, a home, a reliable structure; the joy of a result achieved. A good time to consolidate what has been won.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Do not fuss — find peace and harmony, consolidate what you have achieved, and give form to order. The stage is complete, the foundation is stable: when the occasion allows, clarify or complete the work, bring it into focus, conclude a union on a firm footing. Venus in Aries suggests the key: arrange everything with tact and gentleness, not pressure. Let yourself take joy in the result achieved and feel the safety of home. But remember the card's warning: "limitation carries within it the seeds of disorder" — do not let the order ossify; leave room in it for living growth.

What the forecast holds

Stabilization is coming, completion, a firm result. The work will arrive at a stable, formed state: a foundation, a home, a reliable structure, a firm union. Venus in Aries promises that the result will be tinted with harmony and charm, born of warmth and light. This is the "fullness of the law" — a success that holds by itself and can be governed. A good time to consolidate what has been achieved and to find peace, before the Five breaks the calm open for the sake of new movement.

Four of Wands reversed

The reversed Four is stability turning to rigidity: a completeness unwilling to develop, order for order's sake. It is worth noting plainly that "limitation carries within it the seeds of disorder" — a frozen system begins to hinder the living force. Reversed, this is the "wrong time" to complete the work and bring it into focus: the attempt to put a period is premature, the warmth has not yet done its work. Complacency, a formal but empty union, the halt of growth, the loss of flexibility are all possible. Better to ask whether your order has turned into a cage — and to let a little movement into it, before the Five breaks it open from outside.

How it differs from Waite

Four of Wands — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithFour of Wands
Thoth TarotFour of Wands

Both decks are positive, but tinted differently. In Waite the Four of Wands is hospitality and heartfelt warmth: a tent adorned with garlands, a celebration, a sense of safety, openness to the new and the joy of the welcome guest — a human, warm note. In the Thoth deck the same Four is sterner and more architectural — above all order and harmony, an important completed step born of warmth and light. Waite celebrates the coziness of a settled home; the Thoth deck, the orderliness of an achieved law.
