"Happiness": the luxuriant culmination and perfection of the original force of Water. Satisfaction, the fulfillment of wishes, inexhaustible love of life — one of the kindest and most powerful cards in the deck.
Nine Cups are arranged in a neat square, and all are filled with overflowing water — the most beneficial aspect of the force of Water. The image is almost identical to the geomantic figure "Laetitia" (Joy, contentment), one of the most favorable among the sixteen: wine generously poured by Ganymede himself, the true nectar of the gods.
🏆Nine full Cups in a square — An ordered feast of joy; fullness without flaw
💧Water overflowing — The most beneficial aspect of the force of Water; abundance of feeling
🍷Ganymede's nectar — The wine of the gods; true joy poured out generously
♃Jupiter in Pisces — A blessed conjunction: fortune and the serenity of water
🌙Yesod, number of the Moon — Return to the Middle Pillar; the idea of Water intensified
Interpretation
The Nine of Cups corresponds to Yesod in the suit of Water and the decan Jupiter in Pisces. After the double foray into zones of failure — Netzach Seven of Cups and Hod Eight of Cups — the stream returns to the Middle Pillar, and the Nine-Yesod restores equilibrium. Nine is the number of the Moon, intensifying the idea of Water.
This is an especially fine card: happiness here is bound up in large measure with luck, and luck is governed by Jupiter — Fortune. Jupiter in Pisces is a blessed conjunction: Jupiter is the planet of Chesed (Water in its highest material manifestation), and Pisces lends the water its serenity. Before us is the luxuriant culmination and perfection of the original force of Water.
In the upright position — the fullness of happiness, emotional and spiritual well-being, good fortune, the fulfillment of wishes. Joy overflowing; nectar of the gods; an ordered feast of joy; the self-realization of wisdom in perfect happiness. Satisfaction and carefree ease that can bestow true bliss, inexhaustible love of life.
The calm and inward turning symbolized by the Nine manifests in the suit of Water in its most optimal form: the feeling of satisfaction after an active working day, a pleasant evening among those dear to one. High spirits, a joyful perception of life, sociability — the well-earned happiness of a person enjoying the fruits of their labors.
This is the culmination of water toward which the source of the Ace Ace of Cups has been striving, and the summit that the Six Six of Cups was preparing. The next step is the Ten Ten of Cups, where happiness overflows into satiety. The kindred theme of Jupiterian fortune is Fortune Fortune and Art Art.

Advice & forecast
✦ The card's advice
Accept and share the joy, remembering that calm is not eternal. Before you lies well-earned happiness, the fulfillment of wishes, the nectar of the gods — enjoy it openly and generously, as Ganymede pours the wine. Spend a pleasant evening among those dear to you; savor the fruits of your labors. But a quiet warning is added here: complete satiation is only the basis of future putrefaction; there is no such thing as absolute calm. Do not cling to the summit — accept it gratefully and be ready for change.
🔮 What the forecast holds
Ahead: well-being, satisfaction, blessing — the stream has returned to equilibrium; fortune and generosity have converged. The fullness of happiness, the fulfillment of wishes, inexhaustible love of life — one of the kindest and most powerful cards in the deck. The forecast is exceptionally favorable. Remember only that this is a summit: enjoy it to the full, without trying to hold it forever, for "change guarantees permanence."
↓ Nine of Cups reversed
Reversals in the Thoth are conditional, and a warning is built into the card itself: complete satiation is only the basis of future putrefaction; there is no such thing as absolute calm; "change guarantees permanence." The reversed Nine of Cups inclines toward self-satisfaction, excess, and surfeit that prepares a downturn; or toward a happiness that is superficial, concealing an illusion. The reversal is a reminder: bliss is genuine only as long as it remains alive and generous.

How it differs from Waite
Rider-Waite-SmithNine of Cups
vs
Thoth TarotNine of Cups
Both decks are placed very close, the difference being one of scale. In Waite the Nine of Cups is the famous "wish card": a contented man before a row of cups, well-earned earthly happiness, high spirits, joy, and sociability. In the Thoth the same bliss is brought back to its source: inexhaustible love of life and carefree ease that can bestow true bliss, the culmination of the very force of Water. Waite shows a happy person; the Thoth shows happiness as a state of the element.
