Protected movement toward a goal: the forces are already harnessed and pulling in one direction. Victory through equilibrium, not struggle; what you carry (the Grail) matters more than the race itself.
The Charioteer in amber armor sits enthroned, for the whole system of movement is balanced by itself. The canopy is blue, the color of Binah, like the night sky; the four pillars are the supports of the Universe, the scarlet wheels are the primal energy of Geburah. Four sphinxes, made of parts of the four Cherubim (Bull, Lion, Eagle, Man), are harnessed to the Chariot. On the breastplate are the ten Stars of Assiah, the dew of his Mother; on the crest of his helmet is a crab (Cancer), the visor lowered, his face seen by none of the living. In his hands, at the center, is the Holy Grail of pure amethyst, in the shape of the Moon and the Great Sea of Binah; in the cup shines blood, the spiritual life, light in the darkness.
🏺The Holy Grail — the color of Jupiter, amethyst, in the shape of the Moon and the Sea of Binah; the Charioteer's only function is to hold the sacred thing for whose sake he travels
🦀The crab on the helmet — the letter Cheth ('fence, field'), the cardinal sign Cancer (house of the Moon, exaltation of Jupiter); the first onslaught of the element of Water
🛡️Amber armor, lowered visor — discipline as armor; no part of the body is bared, his face seen by none of the living
🐃The four sphinxes — parts of the four Cherubim with intermingled features — sixteen sub-elements harnessed to a single course
🌌Blue canopy and scarlet wheels — the path from Binah to Geburah; the dew of the Mother (ten Stars) and the primal energy that gives the turning
Interpretation
The Chariot is movement forward, protected and gathered: the forces are already harnessed and pulling in one direction; it remains for the person to keep the center and the sacred thing for whose sake he travels. This is victory through equilibrium, not through struggle; an advance in which what you carry (the Grail) matters more than the race itself.
Put more plainly: the card speaks of the merging of forces, of a great leap forward, and of overcoming obstacles. Confidence, courage, and resolve are the chief components of a decisive step, and the first step toward liberation or toward solving a problem has here already been taken.
The counsel is to gather the differently directed impulses into a single course, to lean on inner discipline as on armor, not to bare what is unnecessary. The Charioteer does not steer but sits enthroned: his strength is that the system of movement is balanced by itself, and calm and the focused contemplation of the goal come first, not fever.
The Chariot shares with the High Priestess The High Priestess the common house of the Moon — it is in some sense her analog, but on the plane of action and protection. To the Hierophant The Hierophant it is mirrored on the other side of the Tree: he leads the fire of Chokmah downward, she the water of Binah. With Fortune Fortune it is kindred through Jupiter, exalted in Cancer. It carries the Grail differently from Lust Lust: here it is shielded by armor and still, there it is raised in the intoxication of passion.
The shadow of the card is the loss of the Grail: movement for movement's sake, armor without a sacred thing within; or the collapse of composure, a retreat into a shell. The card calls you to make the great leap, but out of self-possession, not out of fuss.

Advice & forecast
✦ The card's advice
Gather the differently directed impulses into a single team and move toward your goal out of self-possession, not out of fever. Lean on inner discipline as on armor: do not bare what is unnecessary, do not waste yourself on quarrels and defense. The main thing — do not let go of what you travel for: carrying the sacred thing matters more than winning the race. Calm, courage, and the focused contemplation of the goal will cover half the road for you — the system of movement will balance itself. The first step toward a decision is already taken; hold the center, and victory will come through equilibrium, not through struggle.
🔮 What the forecast holds
Ahead lies protected movement toward a goal and a great leap forward: forces gather into a fist, obstacles are overcome, the first step toward liberation is already taken. A return home, the gaining or carrying of something valuable, a victory won not by struggle but by equilibrium are possible. This is a favorable phase for a decisive step — but out of calm and self-possession, not out of fuss. The shadow of the forecast: if the goal worth riding for is forgotten, then movement goes in circles, the armor hides confusion, and victory slips away.
↓ The Chariot reversed
The reversed Chariot is movement for movement's sake, armor without a sacred thing within. The forces pull at odds, the four sphinxes tear in different directions — inner discord masked by an appearance of drive. Protection turns into a shell behind which the face hides, an inability to open up; or, conversely, the loss of self-possession and the collapse of composure. The emotional vulnerability of Cancer without support: retreat into a shell, clinging, movement in circles. Victory slips away because the goal worth riding for has been forgotten. What is lost here is precisely the Thoth condition — calm and self-possession: without them the 'leap forward' breaks down into fuss.

How it differs from Waite
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Chariot
vs
Thoth TarotThe Chariot
Both decks read the Chariot as a card of a decisive step and the overcoming of obstacles, but point to different driving forces. Waite puts a high goal — or at least a strong desire — first as the thing that prompts the dash forward: his Chariot is about aspiration and surge, about the fact that the first step toward liberation has already been taken. The Thoth deck names as the chief preconditions of the same step calm, self-possession, and the focused contemplation of the goal: its Charioteer does not drive the steeds but sits imperturbably, because the whole system of movement is already balanced by itself. Waite's Chariot is the impulse of the will toward the goal; the Thoth Chariot is the gathered calm out of which movement happens of itself.
