Thoth Tarot
unionchoiceattractionalignment

The card's image

Beneath the Arch of Swords the Royal (Hermetic) Marriage takes place. At the center is a hooded figure (the form of Mercury and the Hermit, the seed of life) in the Sign of the Entering-Blessing, with a scroll-Word. To the left is the Black Moor-King with the Red Lion, to the right the White Queen with the White Eagle; they hold the Spear and the Grail, their hands joined as at a wedding. Two twin children stand crosswise: a white one with a Cup and roses, a black one with a Spear and a club. Below is the fruit of the Marriage, the winged Orphic egg. Above all hovers Cupid-Eros with a golden quiver inscribed with the word 'Thelema.'

Interpretation

The Lovers is choice and union: the joining of opposites into a meaningful whole, but through discernment and analysis, not blind fusion. Relationships, partnership, a contract, in which it matters to understand the 'parts' before joining them. Love as the alchemical marriage of masculine and feminine, spirit and matter.

In earlier decks the card was called 'the Choice,' and that meaning still holds. Most often the Lovers is a herald of meeting a beloved person, but also of any choice of the heart: in a profession, a journey, a venture. If the heart's decision concerns another person, it is usually the beginning of a great love.

The card's counsel is to weigh, to analyze, and then to join consciously; to make a decision, to direct the will (Cupid's arrow inscribed 'Thelema'). Harmony is attained by the labor of understanding, not by confusing fusion with understanding. This is a bold, responsible decision and a useful encounter that binds different factors into one.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

First discern the parts, and only then join them consciously — do not confuse fusion with understanding. If a choice of the heart stands before you, weigh it soberly, but do not evade what truly draws you: here timidity is more dangerous than a mistake. Direct your will (Thelema) and make a bold, responsible decision rather than swinging on the eternal pendulum of 'for and against.' In a relationship this is a call to understand the other as the 'opposite pole' and to enter the union consciously, rather than dissolving into it. Carry the joining through to its fruit — the hermetic marriage demands both analysis and resolve.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies a union, a partnership, or an important decision in which the opposite joins into a whole; often a meeting with a beloved person and the beginning of a great love. This is the 'decisive' stage of the process: a useful encounter, the joining of different factors, the birth of a 'fruit' from their marriage. A favorable phase for the choice of the heart and a conscious union — provided you first understand the parts and then boldly join them. The shadow of the forecast: indecision and the eternal pendulum; if the choice is made blindly, without directing will, the wedding turns into a 'divorce.'

The Lovers reversed

The reversed Lovers is analysis without synthesis or synthesis without analysis: either the eternal pendulum of contradictions, indecision, a 'divorce' instead of a wedding; or a hasty joining of what is not understood. Disharmony, splitness, conflict between attraction and reason. A choice made blindly (the blindfold on Cupid's eyes), without directing will. Duality, unfaithfulness to oneself, an inability to carry the union through to its fruit. This is also the evasion of the choice the heart calls for, or a deal with oneself against one's own feeling. The signal: either you have not discerned the parts and joined them at random, or you have discerned them and not dared to join.

The Lovers — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Lovers
Thoth TarotThe Lovers

Under the common name 'the Lovers' the two decks reveal different facets of the ancient 'Choice.' Waite emphasizes free choice made with a wholly pure heart and the feelings tied to it — inspiration, joy, rapture; his card is closer to the idea of the pure love of Adam and Eve before the expulsion from paradise. The Thoth deck reads the card as the union of opposites — the 'decisive' stage of the great alchemical process: a useful encounter, the joining of disparate factors into a single whole, and a bold decision. Waite's Lovers is above all feeling and the choice of the heart; the Thoth Lovers is the alchemical marriage of forces, the synthesis of the opposite through analysis and will.
