Prince of Cups

Thoth Tarot
romanticproposalidealism

Air of Water: thought moved by feeling. The secret catalyst of change — outwardly calm, beneath the mask the most powerful passion; the ability to redirect any influence into the right channel.

The card's image

The Prince is a warrior whose armor seems to grow from his body; his helmet is adorned with an eagle, and an eagle also draws the shell-chariot. His wings are thin, almost gaseous — a sign of spiritual volatility. In his right hand, a lotus flower; in his left, a cup from which a serpent is crawling. The third totem, the scorpion, is not shown: the alchemical putrefaction it symbolizes is extremely secret. Beneath the chariot — stagnant water under heavy rain.

Interpretation

The Prince of Cups is the airy part of Water: on one side flexibility, volatility, hydrostatic equilibrium; on the other the properties of a catalyst and the energy of steam. In the Tetragrammaton he corresponds to the letter Vau: the son of the Queen Queen of Cups and the Knight Knight of Cups, the active offspring of their union, which is why he is in a chariot and his action is prolonged. He rules the Zodiac from 21° Libra to 20° Scorpio.

Subtlety, secret strength, and cunning reaching the level of an art. Outwardly the Prince is calm and imperturbable, but this is a mask behind which the most powerful passion is concealed; apparently subject to external influences, he accepts them only in order to transform them and use them for his secret purposes. He is interested only in power, wisdom, and his own goals.

As a card — thought moved by feeling; hidden deep work; a catalyst of change; the ability to redirect any influence into the right channel. This is enormous force: Libra transitioning into Scorpio possesses active critical energy and weight. Here an invisible alchemy is at work — the secret putrefaction from which the new is born.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Act through goodwill and sincere partnership — beware of presumptuous ambition. Within you is an enormous transforming force: the ability to calmly accept any influence and redirect it into the right channel. Use it to free yourself from the past and pass into a new emotional phase, letting the feelings that have welled up dissolve what has outlived itself. But do not turn subtlety into cold manipulation: the Prince's success rests on sincerity and the right alliance, not on secret schemes for private gain alone.

What the forecast holds

Ahead: hidden deep work — the transformation of other influences for one's own benefit; a catalyst of change; invisible alchemy altering the situation from within. The feelings that have welled up will help you free yourself from the past and be filled with happiness, passing into a new emotional phase. The forecast is renewing, but requires purity of intention: act through sincere partnership — and the secret force will work for liberation, not discord.

Prince of Cups reversed

He is utterly without conscience in the ordinary sense, and those nearby generally do not trust him: they sense that they do not understand him and never will, which is why he provokes unreasonable fear. He is indeed ruthless, feels no responsibility toward others, and, despite all his abilities, is unreliable in harness with others. Reversals in the Thoth are conditional: here the subtle catalyst becomes a cold manipulator whose passion serves only his secret goals. What is dangerous for him is presumptuous ambition — for success he needs goodwill and sincerity.

Thoth TarotPrince of Cups

The ranks are shifted again: the Thoth's "Prince of Cups" is the junior mounted figure of Waite — his Knight of Cups. The knights in Waite denote not so much persons as a mood, an atmosphere; the Knight of Cups is a soft westerly wind, warm spring air, a gentle evening breeze bringing a good mood. In the Thoth the same impulse is directed inward and downward: the Prince of Cups says that feelings that have welled up will help one free oneself from the past and be filled with happiness. Waite's romantic messenger becomes in the Thoth a dark alchemical catalyst.
