Princess of Disks

Thoth Tarot
diligent studynew beginningspractical learningcuriosityearthly potential

The last of all the Court Cards, the earthly part of Earth. Matter on the very threshold of transformation: the highest light born in the deepest darkness. A fullness pregnant with a new beginning.

The card's image

The Princess's headdress is adorned with the head of a ram; her sceptre is lowered to the ground, and there its tip becomes a diamond — the precious stone of Kether: the highest light is born in the deepest darkness. She stands in a grove of sacred trees before an altar shaped like a sheaf of wheat — priestess of Demeter. At the centre of her disk is the Chinese ideogram of the twofold spiral force of Creation, from which the Rose of Isis is born.

Interpretation

The Princess of Disks is the last of all the Court Cards; she represents the earthly part of Earth, the final Heh brought to its limit. She therefore stands on the very threshold of transformation: matter, having reached its floor, is about to turn into its opposite. By the Tetragrammaton the Princess is crystallisation, the completion and self-absorption of energy, 'the throne of the element'.

Concealed within her body is the mystery of the future: the birth of the highest and purest light in the deepest and darkest of the Elements. Upright she represents mature, fertile embodiment pregnant with a new beginning. Strong and beautiful, she expresses deep thoughtfulness — as though on the verge of knowing a hidden wonder. This is the priestess of Demeter: embodiment that carries within it the seed of the future.

The card speaks of the pregnancy of a conception or a body, of the completion of a great cycle that already contains within it the next; of wealth that has become fertile soil. The counsel: trust the fullness of the moment — that which has ripened to its limit is ready to give birth to something new; accept the shift of state as the turning of the wheel.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Trust the fertile fullness of the moment: that which has ripened to its limit is ready to give birth to something new — let what has ripened be transformed; accept the shift of state as the turning of the wheel. Be open to a precious, feasible offer; do not miss a happy opportunity, including the chance to earn or to receive true enjoyment from a venture. Do not merely wait passively for someone to bring the chance to you — step toward it yourself. Fullness that does not dare become a doorway turns to stagnation; dare — and matter, having reached its edge, will give birth to light.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies embodied richness and fertility: the completion of a great cycle that already contains within it the next. Along the way a precious, solid and feasible opportunity will present itself — a serious addition to your plans, a chance to earn or to have an experience that brings true enjoyment. This is the 'pregnancy' of a conception or a body: something has ripened to fullness and stands on the threshold of transformation. The ending becomes a beginning — accept the turning of the wheel, and from the deepest darkness the highest light will be born.

Princess of Disks reversed

Reversal is conditional: the Princess is like a wheel — whatever number comes up does not determine what follows or depend on what came before. In the shadow — matter stuck on the threshold, not daring to be transformed; heaviness, inertia, the refusal to give birth to something new from what has ripened. A fullness turned to stagnation instead of becoming a doorway. The shadow of 'not the right time': merely waiting passively for a precious offer and hoping someone will bring it — instead, step toward the opportunity yourself.

It is important not to confuse the ranks: the Thoth Princess of Disks corresponds to the Waite Page of Pentacles (in this deck the Princess ≈ the Page of Waite). Both figures are read as a valuable, feasible opportunity that can be trusted — but with a difference of emphasis: the Waite Page stresses fertility and profitability (something solid and advantageous), while the Thoth Princess shifts the accent to sensuality — an opportunity that brings true enjoyment.

Symbolism & correspondences

Element — Earth (the earthly part of it), letter — the final Heh. In this tradition the card is associated with the I Ching hexagram Gen — 'Mountain': the most sacred of earth symbols, immovable in its aspiration toward the Highest; its quality is stillness. The Princess is not bound to a decan as the Prince, Queen and Knight are: she is the throne of the element, the crystallisation and self-absorption of energy, the gateway of a new cycle in which from the deepest darkness the highest light of Kether is born.
