Queen of Disks

Thoth Tarot
nurturing abundancepractical wisdomearthly generositysensual richnessfertile stability

The watery part of Earth: Earth-Mother in her generous, nurturing aspect. Quiet calm, fertility, care — the force that turns a desert into an oasis.

The card's image

The Queen is seated on a throne of vegetable life; her gaze is turned backward, to where a calm river winds through a sandy desert, bringing fertility — oases appear among the wastelands. Before her, on a sphere, stands a goat — a hint at the doctrine of the Great Work as fertilisation. Her armour is made of tiny scale-like coins; her helmet is adorned with enormous spiral-twisted horns of the markhor.

Interpretation

The Queen of Disks is the watery part of Earth, the first letter Heh: the maternal function of the element, its passivity in the highest, most fertile aspect. By the Tetragrammaton the Queen receives and transforms the energy of the Knight; here this is the force that receives the seed and nurtures life into being. This is Earth-Mother in her generous, nurturing aspect: quiet, warm, turning the desert into an oasis.

Upright this means the most delicate calm, fertility, care. Active but only in a useful direction; enormous reserves of love, goodness and generosity. Not an intellectual, but her instinct and intuition are more than sufficient. These people are calm, hardworking, practical, prudent; they love domestic comfort.

The card speaks of maternal protection, tending the home, turning the barren into the fertile, of love expressed through deed rather than word. The counsel: move forward quietly and kindly; nourish and nurture without forcing your way roughly into what has taken shape — allow life to ripen. The important things now are to stand firmly on your feet, hold onto the sense of security, show yourself to be a devoted person and a good family member, feel your connection with nature, pay attention to health and nourishment.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Act quietly and with kindness: nourish, nurture, tend, turn the barren into the fertile — but do not force your way roughly into what has taken shape; allow life to ripen in its own time. Now is the time to stand firmly on your feet, hold onto the sense of security, show yourself to be a devoted person and a caring householder, feel your connection with nature, pay attention to health and nourishment. Express love through deed rather than word; do not be afraid of warmth and sensuality. Only watch that care does not degenerate into indulgence or laziness, and groundedness does not become rigidity.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies a steady, fertile influence: a time to nourish, nurture and tend; care and domestic comfort, quiet growth. A fruitful period, calmness and constancy, an encounter with a practical, down-to-earth woman, or the blossoming of your own caring, sensual side, are all likely. The barren will turn into the fertile, as the desert becomes an oasis beneath a quiet river. This is a gentle, warm force that does not hurry life but allows it to ripen — and therefore its fruits are dependable.

Queen of Disks reversed

Reversal — 'a poor elemental environment'. Then these people are dull, servile, stupid — drudges rather than workers; life is for them a mechanical process and they do not try to rise above their allotted lot. The shadow also includes a tendency toward lust and licence, toward excess in wine and intoxicants, toward seeking happiness only outside oneself. Fertility stagnates, care withers, motherhood turns into indulgence or sloth. The shadow of 'not the right time': sometimes a step beyond the familiar groundedness is needed.

Thoth TarotQueen of Disks

The court rank coincides here: the Thoth Queen of Disks directly corresponds to the Waite Queen of Pentacles — both embody the feminine principle of the Earth element. The difference lies in emphasis: in the Waite deck motherhood and fertility are especially highlighted (Earth the nurturer), while this deck's card adds warmth and sensuality — the living, bodily side of the same caring nature.

Symbolism & correspondences

The goat on a sphere before her, and the decan of Capricorn — a hint at the Great Work as fertilisation.
