Six of Cups

Thoth Tarot
nostalgiachildhood innocencereunionheartfelt giftsweet memories

"Pleasure": joy brought to harmony. A balanced flow of feeling, the accord of natural forces, fruitfulness — one of the finest cards in the entire deck.

The card's image

The stems of the lotuses seem to dance. From the flowers, water sprays into six Cups, but they are not yet overflowing as on the Nine — an image of fullness that has not yet passed into excess. The Sun acts upon Water: its fierce yet balanced force produces that kind of Scorpionic putrefaction that is the basis of all fruitfulness and life.

Interpretation

The Six of Cups corresponds to Tiphareth in the suit of Water and the decan Sun in Scorpio. Tiphareth is the center of the Tree, the only Sephirah below the Abyss directly linked to Kether; the four Sixes represent the best of their elements. Here the Sun acts upon Water: its fierce yet balanced force produces that kind of putrefaction which is the basis of all fruitfulness and life.

This is pleasure brought to harmony; rooted in the most congenial soil, it makes the card above all a card of fruitfulness — one of the finest in the entire deck. The Six carries the idea of usefulness and the striving toward unity, and in the suit of Water this expresses as a harmoniously balanced flow of feeling.

In the upright position — harmonious joy, well-being, satisfaction without effort or tension. Pleasure in the highest sense: calm, the accord of natural forces, flourishing. The fruitfulness of relationships and feeling, a mutuality that nourishes. One of the kindest cards — the promise of genuine, healthy enjoyment.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Allow yourself healthy enjoyment, holding your balance. This is pleasure in the highest sense — the accord of natural forces, a flowering that arrives without effort or tension. Accept it openly, share the warmth, let feeling flow freely. But remember: the mystery holds on the equilibrium of the Middle Pillar — lose it just a little, and the enjoyment will degenerate. Do not look only backward with nostalgia, and do not chase after more: joy lives in the present flow.

What the forecast holds

Ahead: well-being, pleasure, fruitfulness — the solar, balanced force has enlivened the watery element, and feeling is entering its flowering. Harmonious joy, satisfaction without tension, a mutuality that nourishes. This is one of the kindest cards in the deck — the forecast is bright and healthy. Enjoy the living flow, holding your balance, and fullness will not turn into excess.

Six of Cups reversed

Reversals in the Thoth are conditional. The reversed Six of Cups may incline toward nostalgia and idealization of the past, toward pleasure detached from real life, or toward the beginning of the corruption that in the Seven will become debauch. Nostalgic feelings and the awakening of forgotten desires are a blessing only as long as they inspire — not when they overshadow living present. Lose the equilibrium of the Middle Pillar just a little, and the mystery of pleasure degenerates.

How it differs from Waite

Six of Cups — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithSix of Cups
Thoth TarotSix of Cups

There is a notable difference of images here. In Waite the Six of Cups is a card of nostalgia: the recollection of something good, the awakening of long-forgotten desires and intentions, an enthusiasm that comes from the past. In the Thoth the accent falls on the present and future — on a harmoniously balanced, fruitful flow of feeling here and now, on pleasure as a living Mystery. Waite looks back with warmth; the Thoth looks into the very flowering of present life.

Symbolism & correspondences

Tiphareth in the suit of Water, decan Sun in Scorpio (11°–20° Scorpio). Center of the Tree, directly linked to Kether: all that is finest in the element. Sun in Scorpio corresponds to the hexagram "Guan" ("Contemplation") — the idea of Pleasure-Putrefaction as Mystery, one of the keys to the Gates of Initiation.
