Six of Wands

Thoth Tarot
victorypublic recognitiontriumphleadershipgood news

"Victory." The sudden release of the Five's energy is crowned with full success: the Son and the Sun of Tiphareth. The four Sixes are the best in their elements; here it is the joy and enthusiasm of the very sensation of triumph.

The card's image

Nine ordered wands of the Three Adepts burn evenly, "as in lamps," not scattering their flame. Their nine fires point to Yesod and the Moon — the stabilization of energy, its reception and reflection by Femininity. The system is self-sufficient, like the Sun, and not closed within a circle: the Five broke open the forces of the Four, a marriage took place between them, and its fruit is the Son. This is the summit of the suit's middle pillar, where the tension has resolved into harmony.

Interpretation

The Six of Wands — "Victory" — corresponds to Tiphareth (Beauty), the central, most important Sephirah, the only one below the Abyss with a direct channel to Kether; this is consciousness in its most harmonious form, the Sun of the planetary system, the Son of the Tetragrammaton. The four Sixes represent the best in their elements. Here the sudden release of the Five's energy is crowned with full success.

The Five broke open the closed forces of the Four, a marriage took place between them, and its fruit is the Son and the Sun. The decan is Jupiter in Leo: the blessing of harmony and beauty, "a little luck that tips the scale." Nine even lamp-fires point to Yesod and the Moon — the stabilization of energy.

This is a deserved success, recognition: the forces have come into balance, the work is crowned. A triumph in which there is valour, luck, and beauty; leadership that is welcomed; the pride of achievement. The "usefulness and union" of the Six reads as an advantageous meeting, a favorable chance of fate — the image of the card is a herald proclaiming victory.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Accept the victory maturely and carry the work through to a victorious end — the forces have come into balance, and now it is important to gather pace, not to stop. Believe in yourself and strengthen your confidence: you have been recognized, your efforts have been crowned with success, luck has tipped the scale. Let yourself experience the joy and enthusiasm of the triumph itself from within, not only for the sake of outer applause. But remember: from this summit the inner imbalance of Fire is already capable of producing unwanted consequences — continue the path while the fire burns evenly, and do not let success relax you.

What the forecast holds

Triumph is coming, recognition, a favorable outcome, good news. The forces will come into balance, the work will be crowned: a success in which there is valour, luck, and beauty. Jupiter in Leo adds magnanimity and a good fate — an advantageous meeting, a chance that tips the scale. The forecast is bright: you will be recognized and praised, your efforts will bear fruit. It only remains to carry the work through to the end and keep the fire even, before it runs wild at the very summit.

Six of Wands reversed

The reversed Six is a victory fragile or superficial: a success that intoxicates and relaxes, vanity, resting on one's laurels. Notably, from this point the inner imbalance of Fire begins to produce "very unwanted consequences" — the triumph already carries the seed of future decline. Reversed, this is the "wrong time" to celebrate triumph, to await pleasant news, and to count on victory: the laurels are premature. Self-deception about the firmness of the success, the envy of those around, undeserved praise are all possible. Better to check whether the wreath is earned, and not let intoxication lead you off the path.

How it differs from Waite

Six of Wands — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithSix of Wands
Thoth TarotSix of Wands

Both decks coincide in substance — victory and recognition — but Waite shows it through events and the Thoth deck from within. In Waite this is a triumphant rider with a laurel wreath, the image of a herald proclaiming victory, and the foretoken of a concrete piece of good news from outside. In the Thoth deck there is no outer scene — there is a state: the joy and enthusiasm of the very sensation of victory, an exhilarating success, an impulse to continue the path. Waite emphasizes public recognition; the Thoth deck, the experience of triumph from within.
