The Fool

Thoth Tarot
new beginningstrustfreedompotentialinnocence

The Kabbalistic Zero — pure potential and innocence out of which everything is born. Openness to the new, trust in life, the sense that 'anything is possible.'

The card's image

The Fool seems to burst into the world out of golden dawn air — he is painted 'all of gold.' He has the horns of Dionysus, and between them the phallic cone of the white light of Kether. His green robe is Spring, his golden shoes are the Sun. In his right hand a wand topped with the white pyramid of the Father of All; in his left, a flaming pine cone; from his shoulder hangs a cluster of grapes whose stem turns into the rainbow spiral of the Universe. A tiger fawns against him, and at his feet in the Nile a crocodile coils — a threat poised to strike, which the innocent one does not notice.

Interpretation

The Fool is a pure beginning unburdened by the past: the moment when everything is still possible and nothing is fixed. New territory lies before you, and now it is right to try at least once, to step onto unfamiliar ground with curiosity and trust your instinct. The motto of this card is 'anything is possible.'

It is the readiness to step into the unknown at the call of inner will rather than calculation — a 'divine madness' wiser than cautious reason. Spontaneity, inspiration, spiritual freshness; the birth of an idea still formless yet full of power. You are a beginner, and in this lies your strength, not your weakness.

There is a practical layer too: the next step leads to a bold passage into a new, joyful phase of life and to trust in your own instinct. Do not try to calculate everything in advance — keep an open, innocent gaze.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Trust the impulse and take the first step without trying to calculate the whole path in advance. A blank page lies before you, and now it is right to step onto unfamiliar ground with curiosity — to try what you have never done. Keep an open, innocent gaze: do not judge your own will 'from the outside,' let it break through from within. Release fear and calculation — here they hinder you more than the unknown itself. Remember the card's motto, 'anything is possible,' and this moment is made for a bold, joyful beginning.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies the opening of a new cycle — an unexpected turn, an invitation to adventure, a blank page that may still become anything. Life offers you unfamiliar territory and a chance to start over, free of old burdens. This is a favorable moment for a bold passage into a new, joyful phase — provided you trust your instinct and do not cling to the familiar. If the card stands first in a row, it means the very beginning of the path; if last, that an important stage is complete and it is time for a new one.

The Fool reversed

The reversed Fool is the same recklessness turned to folly: impulse without grounding, a leap into the abyss with no sense of the edge. Naivety that others exploit; scatteredness, flight from responsibility under the mask of 'freedom.' Energy has found no channel and spills out in vain. There is an everyday shade too: one can 'act foolishly and end up the fool,' naively rush into a dubious venture, 'play the fool' where composure is needed. Sometimes it is the opposite — fear of the first step, paralysis before the blank page, when a person judges his own will instead of letting it break through. The signal: now is not the time to recklessly seek the new and act rashly.

How it differs from Waite

The Fool — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithThe Fool
Thoth TarotThe Fool

Both decks agree: this is a card of openness and new beginnings. But Waite stresses trust in one's own instincts — his Fool will survive a chaotic situation if he listens to the wanderer's intuition. The Thoth deck shifts the emphasis from psychology to cosmogony: its 'April Fool' is the 'prima materia,' the primal matter of all that exists, the creative chaos-source from which the new is born. Waite's Fool is about inner instinct; the Thoth Fool is about the zero-point of creation, where 'anything is possible.'
