Page of Water

Manara Erotic Tarot
emotional messagecreative sparkintuitive opennesssensitive curiositynew beginning

Compassion, help, rescue — but also a new captivity. The rescuer syndrome, or the longing to be come for and conquered: a sacrificial stance on both sides.

The card's image

A young man rescues a woman from captivity: he carries her, slung over his shoulder, through the jungle. Who is saving whom, and why, is ambiguous. Either he is a hero saving his beloved, or he is simply shifting her from one captivity into another, into his own lair. And she — did she truly need rescuing, or did she dream of being bound hand and foot with everything decided for her? Behind the gesture of rescue here there always trails an unseen thread of debt and an expectation of gratitude.

Interpretation

The Page of Water is a very ambiguous card about compassion, help and rescue, behind which a new captivity hides. In one reading it points to the rescuer syndrome, when you strive to 'do good to' others: to save a loved one or a relationship that has long resembled a dead horse you ought to climb off.

In another reading the card says that it is you who want someone to come and conquer you. To bind you hand and foot and carry you off to his lair — that is, to decide everything for you, to do your thinking, to surround you with all you need. Your part is only to accept, to love and to be grateful. The same sacrificial stance, only from the other side.

The trick of rescue is that the rescuer expects gratitude and reciprocity for his aid. The help here is not selfless: an unseen tally trails behind it. Whether to accept it or not is your decision, but it matters to see what debt you take on when you say 'yes'.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Before you rescue or wait to be rescued, ask: what will you pay for it? Beside dynamic cards — act yourself, save yourself, do not wait for someone to come and decide everything. Beside static ones — hold back the rescuer syndrome: 'doing good' where it is not asked for will cost you dearly. Separate sincere help from a bargain struck for gratitude. A love that rescues in order to gain power and a debt is no longer rescue, but a new captivity.

What the forecast holds

Ahead lies possible help from outside, support in especially difficult circumstances. Whether to accept it or not is your decision, but bear in mind: the rescuer will expect gratitude and reciprocity for his aid. Beside the water suit there is a risk of getting stuck for a long time in emotional captivity — either carrying a sense of debt for being rescued, or endlessly waiting for your own heroism to be acknowledged.

Page of Water reversed

The reversed Page of Water is a rescue that has become a cage for good. In one direction the rescuer syndrome bursts its banks: you force your help, you 'do good' where no one asked, you drag the dead horse of a relationship behind you, you save someone who was not even thinking of drowning — and you grow angry when no gratitude comes. The help turns into an instrument of power: 'I saved you, so you owe me'. In the other direction the sacrificial role becomes your way of living: you wait to be come for, conquered and have everything decided, you renounce your own will, you walk willingly into another's lair and call it love, remaining in emotional captivity for years. The reversed advice: reclaim your own agency. Rescue only those who are truly drowning and asking, and rescue yourself without waiting for a hero. Call a debt a debt and captivity captivity. Beside the water suit especially: the emotional dependence can drag on for a long time.

Page of Cups — Rider-Waite-Smith deck

Manara Erotic TarotPage of Water

In the Waite tradition the Page of Cups is a youth by the sea gazing at a fish peeking from a cup: a tender tiding, a creative impulse, a soft message of the heart. Manara takes the same sensitive, watery nature but makes it active and double-edged: a young man carries the woman he has rescued through the jungle. Where Waite says 'a tender tiding arrives', Manara adds — a rescue arrives that has a price: the rescuer syndrome or the longing to be rescued, and in both cases a hidden captivity.
