Queen of Wands

Thoth Tarot
charismaconfidencewarmthcreative magnetismleadership

Water of Fire, its fluidity and color. The letter Heh: the Queen receives, excites and transmits the energy of the Knight — a steady, magnetic flame. A warm strength that attracts, ruling gently but firmly.

The card's image

The Queen sits enthroned upon fire, which her power has commanded to take the form of geometric light. Her crown is surmounted by a winged globe and gives off flaming rays; her long hair of fine gold streams over her chain mail. In her left hand is a wand with a cone, an allusion to the mysteries of Bacchus; beside her sits a leopard, on whose head she has laid her other hand. In her face is the ecstasy of a woman whose mind is absorbed by the mystery hidden below her breast.

Interpretation

The Queen of Wands is the watery part of Fire, its fluidity and color. In the Tetragrammaton she corresponds to the first letter Heh: the Queens complement the Knights — they receive, excite and pass onward their primordial energy, being the second stage of creation. Hence they are depicted seated upon thrones: they are appointed to perform a particular function. She rules the Zodiac from the 21st degree of Pisces to the 20th degree of Aries.

She is marked by adaptability, persistent energy, a calm dominion that she knows how to turn to her own advantage, increasing her own attractiveness. She is kind and generous, but brooks no resistance; she knows how to befriend and to love — but only on her own initiative. This is a steady, magnetic flame: a warm strength that attracts and warms, ruling gently but firmly.

The Queen usually symbolizes a woman, but sometimes a man — exactly who is meant, and about whom, is decided by the question and the position in the spread. This is the feminine aspect of the element of Fire: inspired, ready for boldness, initiative and risk, for ventures and adventures. This is pride and self-confidence, independence, the ability to be carried away and kindled, the confident execution of what was conceived.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Lead by gentle persistence rather than by force: your strength is a steady, magnetic flame that attracts and warms, ruling gently but firmly. Use charm and the ability to kindle — it increases your attractiveness and turns the situation to your advantage. Be kind and generous, but love and befriend on your own initiative, brooking no resistance to your warmth. Do not, however, let your "broodings" give birth to a wild reaction: heat turned to harm tips the calm flame into caprice. Rule as an enchantress who kindles, not as a tyrant who bears down.

What the forecast holds

A steady influence through charm is coming, a warm power, the holding of fire. An attractive, commanding, generous nature enters your life (or manifests in you) — magnetism and a calm strength that befriends and loves on its own initiative. This is a time of pride and self-confidence, independence, the ability to be carried away and to execute confidently what was conceived; a time of magnetism, passion and beguilement. The forecast favors the one who leads by gentle persistence: a warm power will hold the fire and draw the right people in.

Queen of Wands reversed

She has no less pride than the Knight, but without his inner nobility: pride turns into self-satisfied vanity and snobbery. Her inclination to "brood" gives rise to wrong decisions and wild reactions; easily misled, she shows herself foolish, stubborn and tyrannical, capable of insulting or taking revenge without weighty cause and of lashing out even at her best friends. Reversed, this is "not the time" to let yourself be carried away too far, to flaunt strength and self-sufficiency: heat turns to harm. Reversals here are conditional: the calm flame breaks into a capricious, vengeful flare.

How it differs from Waite

Queen of Wands — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithQueen of Wands
Thoth TarotQueen of Wands

The rank coincides here: the Queen of Wands exists in both decks. The difference lies only in the coloring. In Waite the foreground is her business qualities — self-assurance, intelligence and active energy; often this is an entrepreneur or a boss, a woman of affairs. Here the emphasis is shifted toward temperament and passion: magnetism, the art of seducing and beguiling, an ecstatic burning. Waite's Queen is a willful organizer, this one a fervent enchantress; both are commanding, but the first governs, while the second kindles.
