Knight of Swords

Thoth Tarot
authorityclear judgmentintellectual masterytruth-speakerdecisive mind

A swift, brilliant attack of the mind. A warrior on a maddened horse-Storm races through the heavens with sword and dagger: the idea arrives as inspiration — and the person throws himself at once into realizing it. Bright power, but brief.

The card's image

A warrior in a helmet crowned with a spinning wing rides a maddened horse — the Spirit of the Storm — racing through the heavens: in one hand a sword, in the other a dagger, an image of pure attack. Horse and rider are fused in a single impulse. This is 'the extended flame of the mind' per Zoroaster — the True Will, instantly exploding through reason, the ray of an ideal that absorbs the whole life in one aspiration.

Interpretation

The Knight of Swords is the fiery part of Air, the letter Yod in the element of the suit: wind, storm, unstoppable force of motion applied to the most mobile element. By the Tetragrammaton the Knight is the most exalted, original, active aspect of the element: an armored rider whose action is swift and stormy, but transient. In the element of Air he is the Wind itself, the Spirit of the Storm.

This deck places his rule from 21° Taurus to 20° Gemini: from the grounded steadiness of Taurus to the inspired Gemini. This is 'the extended flame of the mind' per Zoroaster — the True Will, instantly exploding through reason. Such a person is described as an intellectual who, with a clear analytical mind, helps others make decisions: a consultant, physician, lawyer, analyst, usually calm and detached.

In the upright position this is a swift, brilliant attack of the mind: the idea arrives as inspiration, without deliberation — and the person throws himself at once into realizing it. Activity, mastery, subtlety, courage; a mind as sharp as a blade and as fast as a storm. This is also mature experience: the ability to preserve calm and a sober head, to examine a matter dispassionately, to give sound advice, to express a viewpoint clearly.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Catch the inspiration and strike precisely before the impulse fades: the Knight's strength is brief and does not tolerate delay. The idea arrived like lightning — throw yourself into realizing it, without stretching out the charge and without fragmenting it into doubts. Right now is a good time for a decisive intellectual blow, a direct word, a bold conception. But unite the sharpness of mind with a sober head and living feeling: pure fury without a foundation falls apart at the first resistance. If the first attempt fails, a second charge of this storm may not come — so invest yourself fully, at once and through to the end. And if you need advice — turn to a knowledgeable expert-intermediary.

What the forecast holds

A swift, stormy event or a whirlwind-person is coming: bright power, but brief. An idea will arrive as inspiration and demand immediate action — a swift, sharp mind will burst onto the scene. A decisive intellectual charge is possible, a direct word, a bold conception that must be realized at once while the impulse is fresh. Or a clear, experienced advisor will appear — a consultant, lawyer, analyst — to whom it is worth turning. The strength of this card is brief: the outcome is favorable for one who strikes precisely and without delay, and uncertain for one who hesitates.

Knight of Swords reversed

The reversal reads as 'bad elemental dignities.' Then there is no strength in these qualities: the Knight is unable to make decisions and hold a goal; any action of his is easily rebuffed by a counter-force. A charge without a foundation turns into bustle; inadequate harshness turns to insignificance — 'a phantom buzzing in the void.' This is 'not the time' to appear cold, hard, and uncommunicative, to demonstrate only cleverness, or to assail others with bare intellect without heart. If the first attempt fails, there are no more resources. Here — hot-headedness without result, words that slice empty air, a surge that fell apart at the first resistance.

How it differs from Waite

King of Swords — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithKing of Swords
Thoth TarotKnight of Swords

The Knight of Swords in Thoth is the senior male figure of the suit, and this deck's Knight corresponds to the King of Swords in Waite: both are the embodied masculine mind of Air. Waite's King is even and static — a seated judge, analyst, advisor; in his interpretation the aspect of doubt is noted: this person may appear to be a 'doubting Thomas,' but it is only experience and the habit of thinking clearly. This deck's Knight brings the same sharpness of mind into motion: he does not sit on a throne but races on the horse of the Storm — this is intellect in attack, thought as a swift blow.

Symbolism & correspondences

Fire of Air, the letter Yod. This deck places the Knight's rule from 21° Taurus to 20° Gemini. It correlates the card with the I Ching hexagram Heng (32) — 'duration,' continuous action in accordance with the law of one's own being; the first decan of Gemini is the card of 'Interference,' hence the warning of danger for one who bears this symbol.
