Coffin — Lenormand Oracle card (9♦)

Coffin

Coffin · card 9♦
completing a cyclerebirthrelease from the old

The Coffin is the most motionless card in the deck: everything that was moving has stopped and ceased to function. Complete stillness, a pause, a full stop. This is an ending, a loss, a crisis, a situation on the edge of collapse, a sharp worsening, loneliness and emptiness — one of the hardest cards in the deck. But at its core lies the acceptance of life's cycle of birth and death: the old loses its significance and must make way for the new. Although the transition is experienced as a weight, from it comes the possibility of personal growth. In the position of the past, The Coffin represents losses already suffered, more often than not irretrievable; in the position of the future, it represents a passage into a new state, a clean slate, rebirth: if good cards follow, the weight of what is worn out and has been pulling you down will be lifted from you.

Life Areas

❤️Love & Relationships

A pause, an ending, or a deep burnout of the relationship. Feelings slowly die and fade away — without shouting, infidelity, or betrayal: people simply no longer want to be together. Conversations become formal, closeness gives way to indifference. Often this depicts couples without love, held together only by a shared household (living under one roof, sleeping in separate rooms). Sometimes a painful dependency — staying out of fear of loneliness or sheer habit. But beneath the stagnation a potential for awakening is hidden: the ending of one story makes room for another.

💼Work & Money

Major financial losses — investments, time, and resources spent for nothing. Plans that will never come to pass, a dead end, the possible collapse of a business. A very poor omen for any project or endeavor.

🩺Health

An extremely unfavorable card: a worsening of condition, depression, severe losses, a threat to life even from a familiar illness, complications are possible. The advice: get inpatient treatment, undergo examination, no self-treatment. Only very good cards following this one can mean recovery and remission.

Person / Character

A withdrawn pessimist who has absolutely no control over their own strong and destructive emotions and is subject to sharp mood swings — though outwardly they may appear to be an indecisive, unfeeling 'block of wood.' In relationships they make no effort, don't look for an approach, don't try. Often alone, limited in space and means. The card can indicate a long period of isolation or a reclusive life.

Card Combinations

Lenormand is read in pairs and triplets — each combination shifts the meaning. Click a partner card to learn its meaning.

Position №8 in the Grand Tableau

House #8 is the most crisis-laden sphere: ending, loss, crisis, a reset to zero. A card here shows what in a person's life is coming to a close, dying, or needs to be let go. The Sun, The Stork, or The Stars here soften the blow and promise rebirth after the ending; The Cross, The Scythe, The Clouds, or The Mice make the ending fateful and heavy. This is the anchor-crisis house — it reads more harshly than any other.

Timing

Time period

The most stationary card: a complete absence of movement; when asked 'when?' it answers 'never.' Time is eternity, forever. Distance is the final destination.

Mythology

The Coffin is connected to the inner acceptance of the cycle of birth and death: inherited values lose their importance to make way for a new idea about life. In dreams, death is usually a good sign — great changes, unbelievable news, sometimes a birth or a wedding.
