Six of Swords

Thoth Tarot
transitionpassagemoving ongradual healingnecessary departure

A clear, methodical mind that has reached its goal. The hilts of the swords form a hexagram around the Rose Cross: reason that has stopped quarreling and begun to understand. The very best that the suit of Swords has to offer.

The card's image

Richly ornamented hilts of six swords compose a hexagram — a six-pointed star. Their points touch the outer petals of a red rose on a golden cross of six squares: this is the Rose Cross, the central secret of scientific truth, the union of mind and heart. Here the element of success turns away from the idea of division and quarrel; this is reason having reached its goal and been brought into harmony.

Interpretation

The Six of Swords corresponds to Tiphareth in the element of Air and is called 'Science.' Tiphareth is the center of the Tree, the only Sephira below the Abyss with a direct link to Kether; it presents the idea of each suit fully established and balanced. In the Swords this is especially true, for intellect itself is linked to the number Six. Here the element of success turns away from the idea of division and quarrel: this is reason having reached its goal.

The ruler is Mercury in Aquarius: celestial energy acting on the Kerub of Humanity — rationality and humaneness. The Six is read as a number of union and assistance, and in Swords — as a setting-out into the unknown. In Waite this is external change, a cautious 'drawing alongside an unfamiliar shore': a change of occupation, a move, a gradual approach to a new partner.

This tradition shifts the emphasis to the (scientific) interest that spurs the researcher to try new things and explore uncharted directions. In the upright position this is a clear, methodical mind that has reached its goal: scientific thinking, objectivity, mastery of method; intellect that has stopped quarreling and begun to understand.

Advice & forecast

The card's advice

Act scientifically: weigh, test, preserve impartiality — and maintain the union of reason and heart, that very Rose Cross. Right now your mind is capable of stopping its quarreling and beginning to understand; the solution will come from method, not from force or emotion. If the new calls you — a direction, a move, an unfamiliar experience — move toward it with an exploratory spirit: abandon outdated beliefs and examine, test, study. Do not turn analysis into an end in itself and do not get stuck in it where action is needed. The joy of experiment is stronger right now than any fear of a new shore.

What the forecast holds

A clear decision is coming, success through knowledge and method, a resolution of dispute by reason. The mind will find equilibrium and reach its goal: what required analysis, precision, and impartiality will be resolved in your favor. A cautious but beneficial move toward the new is possible — a change of occupation, a move, an approach prompted by healthy exploratory interest. This is the best that the suit of Swords has to offer: reason become an instrument of truth, not a weapon of discord. The line is ascending — clarity and method will lead to a result.

Six of Swords reversed

Reversals are conditional in this tradition. The reversed Six is equilibrium that was not maintained: cold intellect without humanity, science without wisdom; method divorced from purpose. This is 'not the time' to let the current carry you thoughtlessly, to waver and show indecision on the threshold of the new — but neither is it time to rush recklessly into the unknown without a foundation. The arrogance of a mind that mistakes its own tidiness for truth; loss of the fine balance that is nearly impossible to sustain in a changing world. Sometimes — getting stuck in analysis where action is needed, or the anxiety of parting and 'stage fright' before the step toward new shores.

How it differs from Waite

Six of Swords — Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider-Waite-SmithSix of Swords
Thoth TarotSix of Swords

Both decks speak of a cautious move into the new, but the image differs noticeably. Waite depicts a crossing of water — a boat carrying someone away from the former shore: the emphasis is on the external change itself, on parting with the old, on the possibility of moving into the unknown with someone's help. This deck names the card 'Science' and shifts the weight inward to the motive: the new draws a scientific, exploratory interest — the desire to study, to test, to experience. Roughly put, in Waite the key is 'I am crossing to the new,' here — 'I am moved by a thirst to know and explore the new.'
