Interpretation
The Moon is the most complex and many-layered card in the deck — it is best read alongside its neighbors. At the core: feelings. The Moon shows emotion, and its coloring comes from the surrounding cards. All the other meanings grow from the nature of this night light. The Moon draws and fascinates — hence magnetism, enchantment, allure. At night by moonlight, alongside wonder, a wordless, irrational fear of the dark stirs in us — subconscious anxiety, a nameless dread quite unlike the concrete fear of the Mice, Clouds, or Coffin. The Moon sharpens the sensitivity of the nervous system, so it means intuition and subtle perception, and in its shadow side: harmful oversensitivity and emotional instability. Moonlight creates a sense of unreality — illusion, elusiveness, changeability, the shifting: under the Moon nothing can be stated with certainty, everything may be other than it appears. Mythology
The Moon changes shape as it passes through its phases, and so became the symbol of the feminine and of changeability; its realm is the world of dreams, unconscious memory, instinct, and feeling. In Jung's framework the moon is the nocturnal, hidden, passive, irrational unconscious — paired with the sun as consciousness. The card invites you to look into the past to understand the causes of the present, and to trust your intuition: the moonlit path will lead you, in time, to the light of the sun.
